This choice reflects our dedication to our values, deep community connections, and ensuring our initiatives remain true to our core goals. When I first envisioned AJB-Academics, my goal was straightforward: to enhance education and transform the lives of students and early-career professionals with learning disabilities. I aimed to create an accessible platform that provides essential resources for learners from diverse backgrounds. However, as I researched various funding sources, it became clear that teaming up with large banks often comes with strings attached.
Traditional funding models impose strict rules and expectations that can stifle our creativity. For instance, a partnership might require us to adhere to specific programming that doesn’t align with our mission. I wanted AJB-Academics to be a place where we could easily adapt and grow without the limitations set by big financial institutions.
The Value of Independently Funding
Choosing to independently fund our mission enables us to focus on our values and serve our community effectively. This independence gives us the freedom to make decisions that benefit our students and supporters, rather than catering to the interests of shareholders or corporate partners.
This approach also fosters a sense of ownership among community members. When individuals contribute to our mission—whether through crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe or direct donations—they invest in our success. A recent crowdfunding campaign raised over £1,000, a testament to the strong connection between AJB-Academics and our supporters. This bond emphasises that we are all working together towards a shared goal.

For example, our recent campaign generated enough funds to offer 50 service users the opportunity to attend an in person training event on developing essential workplace skills for low-income students and early career professionals with learning disabilities.
